Summary
The finds from those 18 pits are beginning to suggest in which parts of Cottenham the Anglo-Saxon and Mediaeval centres of village were to be found. They also indicate that the village was affected badly by or at the time of the Black Death but recovered significantly in the late mediaeval period. More excavation will make those suggestions more confident.
The finds, mostly of pottery, unsurprisingly included evidence of post-mediaeval and Victorian occupation too.
The involvement of members of the community in archaeology and the steps taken towards further understanding of the origins of one of the villages in the FEAG area are both among the aims of the Group.
